The SJL Fencing Club can directly trace its history right back to Jean-Louis Michel a fencer of immense and possibly legendary reputation. Born in 1784 Jean-Louis was involved in many duels often defending himself with only a practice Foil against Rapiers. His most famous exploit was however during the Napoleonic wars. On this occasion he fought in single combat the eleven best fencers of an Italian regiment could muster. When only two prevots remained it was decided that honour had been satisfied and the proceedings were called to a halt.

Salle Jean Louis fences on:

·       All Levels: Thursday Nights from 7:00pm till 9:00 pm at Rangitoto College, North Shore , Auckland, New Zealand at  Gym No.2 at the back of the School

·       Senior: Northcote College (sports pavillion) Sunday Mornings 10-12 over the summer months

Cost:

Membership is a very modest $150 per year ($125 unwaged) which includes free use of Club gear and Group Lessons for beginners / intermediates.

Beginners:

Beginners are very welcome - we take anyone from 14 to 70!!!  Simply turn up with loose fitting clothes and court shoes and have a go!

Weapons/Standard:

SJL fences primarily Foil and Epee at an intermediate to senior level (but you can most times find someone to fence Sabre with).

Coaching:

SJL is Non Profit Organisation, devoted to the furthering of the Art of Fencing, so we try to make all coaching included in the yearly fee. The senior club coach is Andrew Imms (ex National Representative in all three weapons, and University Blues Coach of the year 2008)

Social:

SJL has numerous social occasions and organises New Zealand’s longest running and best Social tournament on Waiheke Island each year.

Children's Fencing

SJL helps runs two affiliate clubs out of Rangitoto College:

·       The Rangitoto School Club on a Wednesday night from 5.30 till 7.00pm

·       and Pheonix Fencing for cadets on a Saturday morning 9 till 10am.

Affiliations

SJL is fully affiliated to the Regional Province (Fencing North), the National body (FENZ), which is in turn affiliated to the International body. (FIE)

Individual affiliation is left up to the individual themselves
